My exposure to music started early as my mother loved musicals and would put on the records, SOUTH PACIFIC, OKLAHOMA, THE KING AND I as well as many other hits. Having music on made my mother happy and it was much later in life that I realized how much that influenced me. As a school aged child did not have music in school nor any instruments. At one time, we had a piano that belonged to my grandparents but no one knew how to play so eventually my dad chopped it up for firewood my kids were teens we brought in an old piano and 2 children took lessons but it didn’t stick.
As a child, I longed to play an instrument but didn’t have time so that piano went away as well.
When my husband Chuck and I retired and moved to Carthage, it wasn’t long before I saw an article in the paper about a local band for people who either never played an instrument or had not played for years. VOILA!!!! Opportunity comes alive. I signed up and showed up and bought a used flute as that I have now been trying to play for 15 years…….still trying. Being a part of the band is a kick….we have so many accomplished players and some like me still struggling to master even 1 song. We have really improved as a band and now are in demand!
Our directors have been very supportive and are very talented people that love music and enjoy helping people. Playing at different venues (retirement communities, nursing homes etc.) gives us joy in being so well received and appreciated.
I am very grateful for this time in life to do something I always wanted to do and now have no excuse. SO, if this resonates with you – please know we are always welcoming new/old or any adult that is “ITCHING” TO PLAY!!!!
